Why the Giants Should Stay With Joe Schoen as General Manager

Joe Schoen should remain as the New York Giants General Manager after the 2025 season ends. It takes some time for a new general manager’s changes to be shown on the field. According to Google AI that is typicallly three years. Schoen has started in 2022 so this 2025th season is his fourth year. How has he done?

The two previous seasons prior to Schoen’s arrival, 2020 and 2021, the Giants offense was ranked as 31st among 32 teams for both years in both offensive points and yards by Pro Football reference. This is a simple ranking based on total points scored or total offensive yards. Over that two year stretch the Giants were last in yards per pas attempt, net yards per pass attempt and adjusted net yards per pass attempt. The latter two metrics are good indicators for success. They were 30th in third down conversion percent and last in yards per offensive play. In my calculations on the last 22 seasons of Giants football the 2020 and 2021 seasons were the 20th and 22nd ranked seasons for offensive play respectively. These calculations take into account their divergence from the season league averages for various metrics. The offense was definitely what needed fixing more so than the defense. In 2020 the defense was ranked 9th and 12th in points and yards respectively.

Quarterback and Draft Picks

In the 2025 NFL draft Schoen and company traded back up into the bottom of the first round to select quarterback Jaxson Dart at pick 25. In recent online media re-drafts of the 2025 draft many have Jaxson Dart nowgoing in the top five including:

Beacher Report (Brent Sobleski) – Jaxson Dart Pick #1
Mel Kiper – Jaxson Dart Pick # 1
Field Yates – Jaxson Dart Pick # 3
Fox Sports (Bucky Brooks) – Jaxson Dart Pick # 3

Prior to the draft John Kosko, a PFF analyst, ranked Dart as a top 15 prospect in the draft class. Among the top 10 quarterbacks on the PFF Big Board, Jaxson Dart ranked first in passing grade, first in accuracy rate (based on ball placement) on throws between 5 and 25 yards downfield, and second in success rate under pressure  over the entire 2024 season.

As of December 7th 2025, Jaxson Dart ranks eighth in QBR in the league with a 64.7. This at age 22. Last year rookie Jayden Daniels ranked 4th with a QBR of 67.7 at age 24. In 2020 rookie Justin Herbert at age 22 ranked 13th in QBR with a 62.6 and made AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Jaxson Dart is tied for the third most touchdowns of every type ever by a rookie and his rookie season is not even over. He needs two more touchdowns to pass Josh Allen and move into sole second place.

Jaxson Dart is a dual threat quarterback. Among quarterbacks in 2025 he ranks 5th in rushing yards, 11th in Yards/attempt, third in rushing touchdowns and 8th in rushing 1st down conversion percent. Summing the place rankings in those four categories, Jaxson Dart comes in at the second lowest summed rank behind only Patrick Mahomes.

Jaxson Dart’s rookie interception percent of 1.3 ranks 7th all time for 200+ pass attempts by a rookie. His touchdown to interception rate of 3.66 ranks fourth.

The Giants needed a quarterback. Daniel Jones has enjoyed great success now on the Colts. But he clearly was not working out on the Giants. The metrics on Dart indicate that he could be a franchise quarterback. It is still early but looks very good. This if it pans out is a major accomplishment in fixing the Giants offensive problems. As general manager thoughout that process, Joe Schoen deserves credit in contributing to this promising development.

In my post How are the NFL GMs performing in the draft? you can download a chart of GM draft picks from 2012 to 2024. Then search that spreadsheet for NYG. It will show how the Giants draft picks based on the Pro Football Rference AV has improved since Schoen has been in charge since 2022. You can read the post to see how the chart was arrived. Since AV is not available yet for the 2025 season it does not include his 2025 draft. That may have been his best draft yet.

Offensive Line

Going back to pre Joe Schoen, the offensive line has been a seemingly constant problem for the Giants.  To fix the problem in the 2020 dreaft the Giants had drafted Andrew Thomas (OT), Matt Peart (OT) and Shane Lemieux (OG). Following the 2020 season, PFF ranked the offensive line at 31st in the league. The whole line was bad but their first round draft choice of Thomas looked like a mistake having allowed 57 pressures at left tackle this season, 14 more than any other player at the position. He was the only player at the position to be charged with 10 sacks allowed, as well.

After the 2021 season PFF gave the Giant’s offensive line a rank of 30th. Thomas vastly improved. He allowed 19 pressures across 517 pass-blocking snaps. But the rest of the line was still a problem. Enter Joe Schoen in 2022. To fix the offensive line they drafted  Evan Neal, Joshua Ezeudu and Marcus McKethan. They hired offensive line coach Bobby Johnson. Ahead of week 15 in the 2022 seasn PFF ranked the offensive line at 31st.

In the 2023 draft they drafted John Michael Schmitz (OC). Following the 2023 season the Giants offensive line was ranked at 30th by PFF. The lack of development of younger players like right tackle Evan Neal, center John Michael Schmitz, and guard Joshua Ezeudu, was a major disappointment for the season. Following the 2023 season, the offensive line coach Bobby Johnson was fired due to poor performance and development of personnel.

In January of 2024 they hired offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo. In 2024 ahead of week 16 PFF ranked the Giants offensive line at 29th. Following the 2024 season the Giants drafted Marcus Mbow  to help on the line. In the 2025 preseason PFF ranked the Giants offensive line at 28th. Andrew Thomas has turned into one of the top tackles in the league. He ranked third among offensive tackles in 2022 with a 90.3 PFF overall grade and has posted 75.0-plus marks in each of the past four years. The rest of the line was still questionable.

In the 2025 season following the return of Andrew Thomas from injury in week three the Giants offensive line was consistently ranked by PFF in the middle of the NFL. Entering week 11, PFF had the Giant’soffensive line ranked at number 11. Going into week 14 PFF had the Giants offensive line in the top ten. The change in the offensive line has been astounding. This is not just a game or two but a consistent improved season for the line.

Bringing in Carmen Bricillo, who was regarded as a good line coach, has paid off. Besides the elite play of Andrew Thomas, there has been improvement with John Michael Schmitz and 2024 free agent signing Jermaine Eluemunor. Eluemunor’s 73.2 PFF pass-blocking mark places 23rd among 62 qualified tackles, and his 97.7 pass-blocking efficiency score is 10th.

This improvement has been a long time coming. It has occurred under Joe Schoen’s four year tenure. He is involved in draft choices and coach hirings. Due credit has to be given to Schoen for this turnaround.

Year Comparison

The following is a year comparison of the Giant’s regular seasons from 2004 through 2025. It takes a significant amout of statistics from the seasons and subtracts the league average for each statistic to arrive at a difference (positive or negative) of that statistic from the average. This is to account for statistical differences in seasons over a large timeframe. The years are then sorted by each individual statistic and a rank assigned based on the sort from 1 to 22, since that is 22 seasons. The assigned ranks are then summed to attain a overall rank on which to sort the years. This provides a comparison of the seasons.

Here is the results table showing the seasons sorted from best to worst. The rankings are based only on the regular season. So a strong showing in the post season would have no effect on the rankings. Also this is based solely on the Offense. The defense in the season also has no effect on the rankings. The rankings are based on per game statistics so the 2025 season being not finished is accounted for.

Given the 2-11 record the table is a bit astounding. However even looking at the Pro Football Reference rank, which is based solely on points or yards, the 2025 Giants are ranked 23 on points and middle of pack 14 on offensive yards. I tried to give enough weight to points and have four metrics on such – total points, passing TD%, Rushing TDs and Scoring inside the opponent 50 yard line.

The table rankings show that the 2025 Giants offense is better than all of the last ten seasons. You would have to go back 10 years to 2015 to have a better season offensively than 2025. On the win loss record, the Giants have seven of the 13 games that they either won or lost by one touchdown or less. That includes two losses in overtime. If not for a defense, that Pro Football Reference ranks at 30 and 31, the Giants could possibly be 7-6 and in playoff contention.

Yes the 2025 offense ranked better than the 2007 Super Bowl champion team for their regular season. That year in the regular season Eli led the league in interceptions. He had a 56.1% completion percentage and a QBR of 52. They scored on only 51% of their drives past the 50 yard line. The data is available for download at

In Conclusion

Schoen came in to a team that was at the bottom offensively. In his time that team has improved tremendously from an offesnsive viewpoint. This had to have been his major focus. The benefits of these improvements have yet to be realized in large part due to a defense that has been problematic. The Giants won a Super Bowl with an offense that was not much different in regular season play than this one. That offense really stepped things up in the post season. Eli Manning was clutch in his 2007 post season play. In that post season he had 3 game winning drives and 2 fourth quarter comebacks. They also had a strong defense tro help. The 2-11 record of the 2025 Giants does not trully indicate their offensive improvements. Offensively this is a team that could continue their streak of winning a Super Bowl in each of the last four decades. As a Giants fan I am hopeful. Could this analysis be wrong? Yes. Could the Giants disappoint? Yes. It is fine to hope in earthly things as these are gifts from God to enjoy and bring us closer to Him. But it is even better to hope in everlasting things.

Life lesson: Look below the surface for subtle and hidden truths. Things are not always what they appear to be. When we look at the events in our life with the gifts of faith and hope we are more open to finding God in all things. That is a hope that would not disappoint for it is based on the truth of Jesus, whose promises are forever true.
