If the Patriots had won the Super Bowl then Drake Maye would have been the youngest player to win a Super Bowl. That title is held by Ben Roethlisberger at 23 years and 340 days. But what of the other end of the spectrum. The NFL is crowded with quarterbacks at or pushing that 30 years old mark that have yet to win a Super Bowl. Middle age is the awkward period when Father Time starts catching up with Mother Nature.
How many quarterbacks have won their first Super Bowl at 30 or older? Of the sixty Super Bowls there have been ten winning quarterbacks that won for the first time at age 30 or older. That is 1 in 6 or 16%. Here is a list of those with some associated data.
| QB | Season | Age | Team | Drafted | First start | First Start Age | Games Starts at SB |
| Ken Stabler | 1976 | 31 | OAK | 1968 | 1972 | 27 | 51 |
| Jim Plunkett | 1980 | 33 | OAK | 1971 | 1971 | 24 | 98 |
| Joe Theismann | 1982 | 33 | WAS | 1971 | 1976 | 27 | 81 |
| Phil Simms | 1986 | 31 | NYG | 1979 | 1979 | 24 | 82 |
| Doug Williams | 1987 | 32 | WAS | 1978 | 1978 | 23 | 69 |
| John Elway | 1997 | 37 | DEN | 1983 | 1983 | 23 | 219 |
| Brad Johnson | 2002 | 34 | TAM | 1992 | 1996 | 28 | 79 |
| Peyton Manning | 2006 | 30 | IND | 1998 | 1998 | 22 | 144 |
| Drew Brees | 2009 | 30 | NOR | 2001 | 2002 | 23 | 121 |
| Matthew Stafford | 2021 | 33 | LAR | 2009 | 2009 | 21 | 182 |
John Elway stands out as an iron man. His first start was at age 23. He played 219 games before winning his first Super Bowl at age 37. He actually played in three Super Bowls prior starting at age 26 but lost all three. After his team won the Super Bowl for the 1997 season, they went on to win the next one also. Looking at the other players it stands out the relative low number of starts they had before winning the Super Bowl. It makes you wonder if that indicates the toll that prolonged playing takes. Of course it was a different era back in the 70s and 80s with the game being much harder on the quarterbacks. But back then these “over the hill” first timers were winning a Super Bowl every couple of years. Matthew Stafford broke a twelve year hiatus in 2021. Here is a graph of the number of all Super Bowl winning quarterbacks by age.

Four of those post 30 wins were by Tom Brady at ages 37, 39, 41 and 43. Was Brady an aberration or something that can be followed? Tom Brady’s “TB12 Method” was considered extremely disciplined, relying on a meticulous, year-round regimen of strict plant-heavy dieting, intense muscle pliability work (bands, massage), near-total avoidance of sugar/alcohol/dairy, and rigid hydration and sleep schedules. He focused on flexibility over heavy lifting to prevent injury and pain. Whether other quarterback’s would be that disciplined is questionable.
So who are the yet to win promising quarterbacks that have or are approaching that 30 year marker? The ages shown are what their age will be in December 2026.
| QB | Season | Age | Team | Drafted | First start | First Start Age | Games Starts |
| Dak Prescott | 33 | DAL | 2016 | 2016 | 23 | 139 | |
| Jared Goff | 32 | DET | 2016 | 2016 | 22 | 151 | |
| Baker Mayfield | 31 | TAM | 2018 | 2018 | 23 | 120 | |
| Josh Allen | 30 | BUF | 2018 | 2018 | 22 | 127 | |
| Joe Burrow | 30 | CIN | 2020 | 2020 | 24 | 77 | |
| Lamar Jackson | 29 | BAL | 2018 | 2018 | 21 | 107 |
These players have generally played more games than those older first time Super Bowl winners. This under a more quarterback friendly envoronment. Over the next six seasons these quarterbacks will most likely be discussing retiring. Not all will probably be first time Super Bowl winners in that timeframe. Here is a look at what the current quarterback age distribution is based on the 2025 season and as of today.

If we look at a plot of the selected new quarterbacks around 30 and their QBR there is no indication of any decline.

| 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | ||||
| Defense | Offense | Defense | Offense | Defense | Offense | |
| Bills | 4 | 6 | 11 | 2 | 12 | 4 |
| Texans | 11 | 13 | 14 | 19 | 2 | 13 |
| Jaguars | 17 | 14 | 28 | 26 | 8 | 6 |
| Chiefs | 2 | 15 | 4 | 15 | 6 | 21 |
| Patriots | 15 | 31 | 22 | 30 | 4 | 2 |
| Rams | 19 | 8 | 17 | 20 | 10 | 1 |
| 49ers | 3 | 3 | 29 | 14 | 13 | 10 |
| Seahawks | 25 | 17 | 12 | 18 | 1 | 3 |
| Lions | 23 | 5 | 7 | 1 | 22 | 5 |
| Eagles | 30 | 7 | 2 | 7 | 5 | 19 |
That would put Jared Goff and Josh Allen as in the best position to win a Super Bowl among the slowly approaching “over the hill” gang.
